Scoperto da Giovanni Trapattoni, cresce nelle giovanili del Milan, club con il quale esordisce in Serie A nella stagione del 1976/'1977. Difensore centrale, diventato titolare sotto la guida tecnica di Nils Liedholm, conquista con la maglia rossonera lo Scudetto '79-'80, una Coppa Italia ed un campionato di Serie B. Nell'estate del 1982, passa sull'altra sponda di Milano, all'Inter, dove disputa quattro stagioni collezionando complessivamente 109 presenze. Termina la sua carriera, difendendo i colori di Udinese, Roma e Genoa: con quest'ultima raggiunge un prestigioso quarto posto nella Serie A 1990-1991. Il 24 febbraio del 1979 debutta in Nazionale, all'età di 21 anni, nell'amichevole di Milano contro i Paesi Bassi. Da quel momento, entra in pianta stabile nella rosa del ct Enzo Bearzot, che lo convoca sia per l'Europeo del 1980, dove l'Italia si classifica quarta, e sia per il Mondiale del 1982 in Spagna, terminato con il trionfo degli Azzurri.
