Johann Esaias Nilson (1721–1788): Die Lage des Königreichs Polen im Jahre 1773

Zarin Katharina II., der russ. Diplomat Nikita Panin, der österr. Kaiser Joseph II. und Friedrich II. von Preußen beugen sich über eine Karte Polens. Jeder der drei Monarchen deutet auf ein Stück Land, das er für sich beansprucht. Panin, der die Teilung Polens politisch eingefädelt hat, zeigt auf einen Engel, der die Rechte der Monarchen verkündet.

Mit seinem Stich prägte Nilson für lange Zeit das Bild von der ersten Teilung Polens im Jahr 1772. Gleichzeitig hielt der massenhaft verbreitete Stich die Erinnerung an die Existenz Polens in den Köpfen zahlreicher Patrioten wach.
